General Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee, Confederate General, is
remembered as a great tactician who
was able to win battles despite being
outnumbered and outgunned. After 23
years of distinguished army service he
was promoted to Colonel and then
served as superintendent of the Military
Academy at West Point. On April 18,
1861 Lee was offered field command of
the United States Army. The next day
he learned that his home state of
Virginia had seceded from the Union.
Forced to choose between his ties to
the Union and his family home, Lee
submitted his letter of resignation.
Three days later, he accepted the
position of commander of the Virginia
forces. His formidable reputation grew
with victories at Manassas and
Chancellorsville. He was promoted to
General in Chief of the Confederate
Army in February of 1865, but was
forced by the prevailing circumstances
of the war to surrender to General
Ulysses Grant at the Appomatox
Courthouse on April 9, 1865. After the
war, Lee returned to Richmond Virginia
where he spent his final five years as
president of Washington College. His
example of conduct earned him the
respect and admiration of both his
soldiers and the nation.
Our Lee stands 11 1/2” tall and
includes an authentic officer’s
slouch hat, frock coat, shirt, cravat,
dress sash, breeches and boots.
