By the 1850’s, there were many
economic and political differences
between the Northern and Southern
states in America. Over time, these
differences led to anger between the
North and South. Tensions continued to
build, until finally, on April 12, 1861,
Southern forces attacked Fort Sumter,
a federal fort in South Carolina. The
American Civil War had begun.
For the
next four years, America would be at
war with itself-a nation where brother
fought against brother in a desperate
attempt to determine the fate of a
country. The US Army during the Civil
War was the largest army America had
ever raised. Of the 2,772,408 men who
served in the US Army, the vast
majority were infantrymen.
The Union
and Confederate infantryman carried a
varied uniform and kit. One of the
standard pieces carried by all soldiers
was the all-important haversack. Made
of white cotton or black enameled
white cotton, the haversack was used
to carry a soldier’s surplus of food and
drink or his personal belongings.
This functional messenger style bag
