General Ulysses S. Grant is remem-
bered as the “Hero of Appomottax”,
the Union General who accepted the
surrender of Confederate General
Robert E. Lee and brought the
American Civil War to an end. He
served as Regimental Quartermaster
during the Mexican War and retired
from the army in July of 1854. At the
start of the Civil War, Grant started a
second military career by recruiting
state volunteers. He successfully drilled
rebellious Illinois volunteers into a
fighting unit responsible for taking out
several Confederate guerilla groups
and was promoted to brigadier general.
Despite high casualty rates, his strategy
to take Vicksburg via the south gave
President Lincoln cause to comment “I
cannot spare this man, he fights!” In
1863 Grant was promoted to lieutenant
general and given command over the
union armies. After driving Lee’s forces
out of Petersburg and Richmond, Lee
surrendered to Grant at the Appotomax
Courthouse on April 9, 1865. After the
war, Grant was promoted to full general
and oversaw the military’s role in
Reconstruction. His war career led him
into the Presidency in 1868. After the
serving two terms in the White House,
he moved to New York to write his
memoirs. He died just one week after
they were completed.
Our Grant stands 11 1/2” tall and
includes an authentic officer’s slouch
hat, frock coat, shirt, dress sash,
breeches and boots.
