The Curtiss P-36A as flown by 2d Lt. Philip Rasmussen is the first in a series of 1/72nd scale aircraft produced in cooperation with the Arizona Memorial Museum Association and the National Park Service.
Among the few US aircraft in the air over Oahu on the morning of December 7, 1941 were six Curtiss P-36A “Hawks”. Greatly outnumbered against 17 technologically advanced Mitsubishi A6M5 Zeke “Zeros”, pilots from the 15th Pursuit Group/46th Pursuit Squadron managed to get off the ground at Wheeler Field and engage the Japanese.
This 72nd scale replica of the P-36 includes the authentic markings of the plane flown by 2d Lt. Philip Rasmussen who was credited with taking down one Japanese “Zero”. He safely landed his severely damaged plane with no hydraulics, severed rudder cables and 544 holes in the planes fuselage including those caused by 20mm cannon fire. Lt. Rasmussen received the Silver Star for his heroism, and graciously permitted us to use his personal vintage photographs and account on the packaging. This scale plane has retractable landing gear and the exact markings of the plane flown on December 7, 1941.
Legacy of Valor donates a portion of the proceeds from this product to the USS Arizona Memorial Fund.
