On December 7, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack at Pearl Harbor hoping to destroy the US Pacific Fleet. Two of their primary targets, the aircraft carriers USS Enterprise and USS Lexington were fortunately not in port that morning. About 200 miles out to sea the USS Enterprise, upon hearing of the attack, sent its Flying Squadron Six out to search for the Japanese carriers responsible for the attack.
Unable to locate the enemy the six “Wildcat” pilots were sent to land on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor. Despite their arrival’s announcement by radio, the squadron was fired upon by US anti-aircraft guns. Three of the pilots were killed by friendly fire; two survived crash landings elsewhere on the island. Of the six, only Ensign James Daniels was able to safely land his “Wildcat” on Ford Island.
This 72nd scale replica of the F4F-3A has interchangeable "up" and "down" position landing gear and includes the authentic markings of the plane flown by Ensign James Daniels who allowed us the honor of telling his story and the use of his vintage photographs on the packaging.
